The Printer documentation was very good; everything was included except the cables. The printer works great except when trying to print multiple pages on pre-punched paper in duplex mode. The first page or 2 worked OK but then the paper would become misaligned for the second side of the page. The fix is to not use pre-punched paper. On regular 20 lb paper it works for 100 pages in duplex mode.

I have about a thousand pages through this machine now and it has done well. If you need a simple black and white printer that automatically printson both sides of the paper it is a great deal. Prints very fast on single sided and reasonably fast still on double sided printing. Sharpness is good and documents look nice. Software interface is simple to use but offers a lot of features. No intrusive software like HP which is a real pleasure. A great feature about this printer is that it takes normal 144-pin laptop memory up to an extra 512MB. I upgraded mine with an extra 128MB card I had lying around. This printer is very fast and gives high quality output. I use duplex (automated double sided printing) all the time and it works great.

This is one of the best B&W laser printers out there for a small to medium sized businesses or home offices. You can't go wrong.

Pros: Fast and easy installation; very speedy printing; print quality very good for text; high capacity toner cartridges available (compatible cartridges are reasonably priced).

The crinkling of envelopes occurs because the intake feed roller presses the envelope too tightly, causing the envelope to billow as it passes, and the latter part of the envelope is unavoidably crinkled.

We bought this printer because our other Brother laser printer (2140, also a really good printer) does not conviently support DOS appliactions, and it does not have serial port connectivity. We use the 5340D it in our home office for just about everything, yet we do also have a color printer as needs arise. The 5340D does support DOS and has both USB and serial port connectivity, and the duplex feature is just a convient bonus. The chassis is a little bit taller than the 2140, but that is not a problem for us. The ease and quality of specialty printing, being envelopes, or odd sized paper, or unique paper is very good! First off, at the current price (199), buy the Brother HL-5370DW Laser Printer with Wireless Networking and Duplex instead. It is the same printer at the same price with one added feature: wireless. When I bought my printer, it was on sale for 130. Anyway, this review should apply equally to the HL-5370DW.

Need I say the printer is great? I needed to print 600 pages the first time I used it, and it spit them out like bugs bunny with turrets. The duplex feature saved me a lot of paper!

Second, I don't think this is mentioned anywhere so I'll point out that the printer comes with a FULL TN620 toner and drum. This means you will get up to 3,000 pages before even buying your first toner!

Set up was a breeze. You don't even need to run the included CD. Just connect the printer, Microsoft's found hardware set up will quickly find the driver for you. run the set up and install!

Troubleshooting Advice #1: As another reviewer noted, however, using 3 hole pre-punched paper caused jam after jam until I figured out how to fix it: tape the paper guider thingees on the top of the printer (the two dangling pieces on top of the printer just above the roller over the output tray - sorry for the dearth of technical knowledge). I think its supposed to prevent paper curl, but all it does is cause paper jams! Unfortunately, it cannot be easily removed without breaking it off so I just lifted it up using tape (I just used the blue tape that came with the printer) and presto, no more paper jams! This is a nice alternative to simply not using prepunched paper as the other reviewer suggested. I'd rather leave some tape on my printer than have to manually punch holes in 500 sheets!

Troubleshooting Advice #2: Every time I started my computer 8 pages spit out of the printer with the error message 'USBCBIOS'. If anyone else has this problem, it is because you are using an outdated USB 1.0 printer cable. There is an easy fix: use a USB 2.0 printer cable. By the way, the only CON with this printer is that a USB cable is not included in the box. But like most people, I have a million of these things lying around anyway.

I read the reviews on this printer before buying it. I had always bought HP printers in the past, but I did not want to spend a fortune on a new laser printer and duplexing was a plus. When I saw the price AND that this printer does automatic duplex printing, I was pretty well sold. I took advantage of Amazon's free shipping so delivery of printer was a little slower than it would have been if I had used (expensive) air shipping (about 5 working days).

The printer was very easy to setup and does a creditable job of printing. It is slightly slower on the first page than my old HP LaserJet 1300, but still acceptable. The only problem I am having is in USING DUPLEXING with MS Word 2002. For some reason, two copies are always printed. This has happened so far ONLY with Word. Acrobat documents do not exhibit this problem, nor does printing from the Web. As Word 2002 is "obsolete", I have had no luck finding a driver that cures the problem. Not a biggie...

I think Brother should put into its next commercial song (jingle) the loud snapping noise this printer makes when it feeds paper. It sounds like something is breaking into a million pieces. So you might argue "so who cares, you only refill the paper tray every once in a while." The problem with that theory is that the sound is a clue to something-- the paper feed mechanism in these machines is prehistoric, crude, and cannot stand-up to time and whenever you have that kind of violent mechanical action in a product, you know it's poorly designed and it won't last long. So after about 5 months, my printer stopped feeding paper. After walking through the process, calling technical support, I noticed as I expected a spring had fallen-out from the contraption and there was no way to find out where it belonged, it's a mess. Now out of the box this was not a perfect printer. Two-sided printing is known not to work well on these printers and it never worked well on mine-- it jammed frequently. One-sided printing was "OK" until this problem and now the printer is trash unless I want to hassle with a warranty process on a $100 item. Many of us may remember years ago the quality of laser printers- for example, those made by NEC would last a decade. Nowadays you have a choice of junk or junk at a low price. You can't say "hey, I'm willing to PAY for quality, just provide it." Instead, it's a low-ball market of low-ball products that flim-flam their way into your home and then fail. This is another one of those products. At $100 or so you can take your chances, but you know that in the end, you may waste your time and money. At least it works with Macs and PCs on my home network, which the HP Laserjet P1006 it replaces DOESN'T! HP, you've lost me. At the current price, you are gambling that you will get a working product. If you don't like taking a risk, I would advise you look for another printer. This printer has not printed more than 1 or 2 pages without failing. Paper jams on EVERY use. Sure, this is likely one bad item out of many, but now I need to decide whether I want to spend my time wresting with the return policy and/or manufacturer. This may go in the trash today.
